Breaking the Mold

We sometimes hear people say, “They broke the mold when they made him.”  The words are generally used in reference to some uniqueness about a person.  In the case of uniqueness of poor character having the mold broken is a positive thing.  On the other hand, when there is a unique attribute of good character, we wish that the mold was still available for use.

In the case of Christ, most would agree that we want a mold permanently available for those who would like to pattern themselves after the blessed redeemer.  We are after all taught to be like Christ (hence the name Christian).  The book of Romans tells us that we need to be transformed.

Romans 12:1-2 KJV  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

However, some today are essentially breaking the mold of Christ through the adoption of unscriptural practices.  Whether it be institutionalizing the church or just allowing for looseness of interpreting New Testament doctrine, people are forgetting the mold from which they were formed.  The Bible warns us about forgetting.James 1:23-25 KJV  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.Sometimes people hear the word of God but do not do the word of God. Man often places more importance on tradition and opinion than they do on what God wants.  This was the case in the time of Christ when he visited the temple.John 2:14-16 KJV  And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise. The people thought it more important to be able to buy their animal sacrifices in the temple and for those selling to make a profit than to use the temple in a way that God was pleased.  How often do people compromise the worship service by things that are questionable because of the will of man?  How often do people question the writings of the apostles because the teachings are not suitable or modern enough for people today?  How often do people use their own bodies, the temple of the Holy Ghost (1 Cor 6:19), in a manner which isn’t pleasing to God?It is not for us to question the will of God.  We can have all of the opinions and preferences that we want but they do not hold any value if they are opposed to the teachings of God’s word.  The Bible is very clear on the imminent danger of questioning the will of God.Romans 9:20-21 KJV  Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?

God, who created man, has given us a perfect pattern.  God has the power to mold us and make us acceptable.  Jesus, God’s only begotten Son, was given for us.  His life is a pattern for us to use.  His death and resurrection frees us from sin and gives us hope.  His words through the writers of the Bible instruct us in how to receive forgiveness from our sins and how to live pleasing to God.  Please, hold to God’s word and don’t break the mold
